The Giles County Historical Society hosts a variety of events throughout the year. These events include guest speakers, special programs, exhibits, and much more.
Living History Day. May 26th, 1pm to 5 pm. No admission charge. 208 N. Main St. Pearisburg Events: James S. Connell(Jim) a descendant of Adam Harman. Jim will be in costume and character of Adam Harman. Jim portrays his ancestor each fall in the outdoor celebration of the discovery of Mary Ingles. Malcolm and Gerry Phillips will welcome you to the Research Library and help with genealogy needs. Master Jared Lawson, lover of history, and Barbara Rowleatte curator of the museum will be 18th Century History. The 51st Virginia was composed of 11 companies from southwest Va. They fought the "forgotten war." The 51st had great admiration for their General Gabriel Wharton. General Wharton assisted in the establishment of athe Virginia Agriculture College, now Virginia Tech at Blacksburg. The living History soldiers are from Roanoke and Stuart Va. Many had ancestors in the 51st. Chews Battery of horse artillery was organized in Flowing Springs, Jefferson County, Va. Captain R. Preston Chew was the oldest of the officers at 19. Chew was a pupil of Stonewall Jackson. The recreated battery currently has the use of five full size cannons, approximately 50 members on roll. It is sponsered by the New Market Battlefield Military Museum, New Market, Va. A museum quality reproduction of an 1861 10lb Parrot rifle will be demonostrated by Sgt. Earl Jeuck, R. Preston Chews Battery Va. horse Artillery. The 8th Va. Cavalry Regiment was organized earlyl in 1862. Many of the men were recruited in Smyth,Nelson, Kanawha, and Tazewell Counties. They particiapated in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment contained 225 effectives in April 1864. None were included in the surrender at Appomattox-the 8th had cut through the Federal lines and disbanded. In 1994, the 8th Virginia Calvalry was organized once again. This time as a Living History Unit by Major Jeff Rice and Raorey Sisson. Jeff and his wife Debra had relativies that fought with the 8th in compaines A, Smyth Dragoons, and K, the Sandy Rangers. Major R. Ellison, Regimental Surgeon, 28th Regiment Vol. will be headquartered on the 1857 Doctors Office. Other displays--William H. Jacobs, Civil War medical/artifacts.
